Nachiyarkoil Kuthuvilakku is one of the regional specialty and Geographical Indications(GI) tagged products in India. As per the name, it is a handicraft product and exclusively made from the town called Nachiyarkoil, which is located in Kumbakonam City in the state of Tamil Nadu. Nachiyarkoil Kuthuvilakku was recognized as Geographical Indications(GI) tagged product by the Geographical Indications Registry of Government of India in the year 2010.
Nachiyarkoil lamp is also known as a traditional Annam lamp. It is an ornamental brass lamp that has four components namely “Keezhbagam”, “Kandam”, “Thanguli” and “Prabhai”. The Keezhbagam is the base plate of the lamp, Kandam is the pivotal post, Thanguli is the bowl with five gloves for lighting by wicks and oil, and Prabhai is the crown in the lamp. These four key components were screwed and used in the pooja room and temples. The lamp is available in standing or pedestal forms and hanging forms, which are mostly ornamented and hung in the temples. The lamp is made in both brass and bell metal.
